Firstly i dont know if anybody has said but some1 asked who the fat guy in the track suit was? He was the FIA guy with the sun glasses on. Donnie is a super hero as when he is with Frank he has super strenth as he put the axe in the head of the statue. Also it was Roberta Sparrows destiny to be in the road when frank missed her and hit gretchen she was holding the letter from donnie.

I just saw the movie. It was okay. Not the best. Seemed as though who ever made it was trying to hit something deep inside of us, but never hit the tender spot, just looked as though it was trying its hardest.

you know, I've thought a lot about this movie. I've watched it way too many times and thought of way too many interpretations and deeper meanings. My conclusion is that either it's a poorly executed satire, disillusioned/defeated movie for the greater good, or just a joke to get us all to look into deep, philosophical ideas without any hint of an actual conclusion. But I will still watch it when i get the opportunity because Jake Gyllenhaal is a really cute boy and I think sometimes I like to be pissed of about lack of meaning.

hey,it's frank here-you remember-I was the giant bunny in donnie darko.I'm so glad you enjoyed this movie, you all hold a special place in my heart. This was really my first big break in the movie buisness for me-however you may remember me from such TV shows as "Between Fear and Love" and "Crimes of Passion"-these were pretty obscure soaps that were filmed back in the late 80's and were only aired on cable channels- I don't expect anyone to remember them (we only filmed 3 episodes of crimes of passion!) After that short brush with fame I decided to try my hand at working behind the scenes-I co-produced "Back To the Future 3" and did some work on "Bill and Ted's Bogus journey" you could probably pick up on some the darker elements I enjected into it. Things went a bit quiet for a few years and I (regrettably) became addicted to heroine and developed a nasty drink problem...the world of showbiz soon became a very lonely and isolating world for a young guy like me-I was still only in my mid-20's.During this dark chapter of my life I (regrettably) decided to do some production work on "Friends" and "Spin City"-seeing Michael J Fox again did cheer me up a bit though.I learned he was having some problems of his own to deal with-he had developed Parkinsons. Michael and I remained close friends for a few years-I even acted in the "frighteners" with him-the computer animation of the Death character was based on me with motion capture technology-I had to wear a skin-tight spandex suit with little micro chips all over it-we had some good times back then! After rehab things looked bright again-I wrote a few of the scripts for "Ally McBeal" and "The Norm Show"-I felt happy again.Just as I thought things couldn't get any better I got a phonecall from the young Richard Kelly who wanted me to star in his new movie (I had never heard of him before so I didn't pay much attention at first).Once I read the script though I was blown away-this is what I was waiting for. I had a great time during the filming of Donnie Darko and made a lot of new friends-to be honest I still can't figure out what the movie was about...I just knew it was a masterpiece. I guess what I'm trying to say here is,follow your dreams-no matter how low things are looking-they will get better-it just takes time, determination and optimism...
take care of yourselves Frank.

Hey guys~
This movie is full of connections..ranging from religious to society. There is a bucn of religious references concerning Roberta Sparrow and the book that she wrote. donnie basically uses her book as a bible. Throughout the whole movie he is discovering god's path and realizes that as long as your are on god's path, you can travel back and forth through time ( which is what he was trying to discuss with his chem teacher). He also acts almost as jesus, giving up his life to save the people he loves. there is so much more, and i am still going to watch it again in order to figure out what's going on with drew barrymore's chacater and the other teacher. There's so much to think about..its great.

I think the chinese girl represents like purity in society. It seems like everyone was being brainwashed by society, just like today. And the girl wore earmuffs as to block out anything that could minuplate her. you see on her books that she had a crush on Donnie, because he was the only guy that was real. Drew Barrymore's character seems to fit into that whole idea too. she has a moment with the girl where she gives her a look of understanding..and also appreciates her performance...which was from the soul...not like the sister's performance. i dunno...im trying

Oh oh oh ... you can not wrap your mind around this movie. There are too many what ifs! :) Excellent movie if you enjoy movies that play with your mind. It will deffinetly leave you going "Huh? WTF!?"
You have to gain an understanding in Quantum Physics to truly understand how it all works. Time travel and warped realities - too much for my brain to comprehend. EXCELLENT MOVIE!

i just saw DD on the relentless raving of my friends about it and oh my... this is the deepest, most mind boggling film i have ever seen... it is a work of true art. i have read through the first 17 pages of the forum (about) and understand it much more, but i know i have much more to learn! i will comment further when i read through it all...
i just would like to say though (forgive me if it has already been said) someone asked who the artist of the drawing of the eye with the skull in the pupil.. i am not sure of the title but it is by M.C. Escher...lovely escher...

I read almost everything u guys wrote,i have visited website and watched deleted scenes.i came with my own theory of the movie, but before i put it here i have couple questions.... donnie darko proved that living things don't die alone.but if u visit website it says roberta sparrow died alone.so,what did she mean when she said ALL living things die alone?any ideas?

doesnt dues ex machine mean machine of the gods? i quote- a person or thing that appears or is introduced unexpectedly and suddenly into a situation and provides an artificial or contrived solution to an apparently insolvable diffuculty. like sent by the gods? meh! anyways i wanted to know why the hell did your man frank have a pycho fasination with the bunny at the end is showed he had drawings and sculptures all over the joint of this rabbit like he was obsessed with it. where does that fit in hmmmmmmm?

oh and dont mean to spam but if someone can tell me how in the name of god(supposing that it all wasnt a dream or a vision) did donny travel back in t ime cause it wasnt through the worm hole that was 40000 feet in the air and hes not made of metal is he?
>>By Senoir FuCk aSs (Saturday, 28 Feb 2004 09:15)
ok ive just read the post by Jamuraan oh btw nice one! i feel like a twat for asking the worm hole question but it still leaves the frank obsession and remember he had just woke up in the primary universe so he had no time to make the drawings etc was this a result of him being "chosen" as minipulated dead or an irrelevancy?
>>By Senoir FuCk aSs (Saturday, 28 Feb 2004 09:31)
Hey everyone.
I have been on many DD discussions forums but this is the best one by far. I have my own theory on everything within the film, I won't bother to go into it all now though as i'd just be retypeing everything that has been said in chunks in other posts. At the end of the day maybe there isn't an exact explanation for any of it but someone sat down and wrote this film and they know what each individual moment means so we're not discussing in vain!!
There is only one thing that is keeping me up at night still... I expect I am just not thinking about it right and that's all it is but basically, most people, myself included agree that a rip or glitch in the forth dimension has resulted in the tangent universe appearing which has * amount on time before it collapses possibly taking the real universe with it.
Most of us also agree the engine is the artifact that must be guided through a series of events into the wormhole to fix everything - Now what I don't get is why does it? why does the artifact passing through into the original universe fix everything, I just don't get that. I guess a lot of you probably think 'what an idiot' about now but I really thought about it a lot and the more I did the less it made sense.
- I think it is intended that all the events may or may not be related to God, just like in our own real lives there's no proof either way, it's how we wish to believe or interpret it all, I think the film mirrors that idea.
- In my opinion Donnie is laughing because he 'knew' most about the series of events we see and realising the true complexity of everything, time, people etc. just gave a slightly hysterical laugh at it and accepted that fate of all man is to die and he had decided from his experience that he may as well stay in bed and just laugh about it, what woudl really be the point in anything else.
Anyone want to chat or share their whole theory with me - Steve_3000@hotmail.com I Will reply to all messages.

ok,finally i have time to write this.well,i really don't,but i can't wait untill somebody else do it first.so,here's my theory about movie donnie darko.... we all know that primary universe becomes tangent when something wrong goes in 4th dimension.but what does donnie's death got to do with fixing rift in 4th dimension?why didn't i say fixing tangent universe?because he didn't fix that, tangent universe was there as second plan to complete destiny.we all forgot about main theme of the movie...DESTINY. 4th dmension creates when something that was destined to happend, didn't.i guess it's almost always death of person which was supposed to die like he was destined to,but something goes wrong and that person that was destined die that day don't die.in our case it's donnie darko.he was supposed to die that night on october 2. because that was his destiny.but he didn't,which created rift in 4th dimension(breaking destiny).remember god's channel?well, like donnie said...we can't change our destiny if we travel in god's channel.god's channel is tangent universe which is suppose to bring 4th to normal.it's like, god created 4th dimension and decided that if rift in 4th dimension creates it will be fixed by tangent one.frank(who was manipulated death, remember, gretchen died only so frank could get shot) has important role as a guide which was gonna make donnie realise it's up to him to save the rest of the world, which was gonna colapse because of not fullfiling the destiny..without him would tangent universe start but nobody would ever know about it,not even donnie.plane would never fell down if frank wouldn't weak up donnie.he would just stay in bed and propably have a dream about fucking;).so,the plane that cashes in the donnie's room is just result of frank weaking up donnie.frank came from future, since there were two franks, one that was alive and other one death which guided donnie.about grandma death....i don't think she ever could be living receivor.first of all, because that fucks up my whole theory of destiny;) but nah, there are also different reasons.sign that tangent universe occured was unexplainable metal object(like arrow in past) which was never found after that night she left the church and wrote book.fact that she didn't know when exactly she's gonna get letter proves she couldn't really travel into future while she was living receivor or that she was prophet otherwise she would know not all living things die alone(even when she died alone, there was god waiting for her,"god loves his children").but like somebody said, dead grandma death could travel from future to past and tell living one to leave the church, write a book, and wait for letter.she couldn't tell her when exactly is she gonna get it because it wouldn't work then.she was also told to tell donnie that all living creatures die alone for donnie to ask his faith in a god. donnie laughs on the end of the movie, because there is so much to look forward to and he can breath with relief, and also because he wasn't scare to be alobne no more,to die, because it was his destiny created by god which was now waiting for him with open hands.so,he laughs to death's face.

i've only gotten to read a few pages of comments from somewhere near the middle, but i thought i'd reitterate a few questions and make a few points.
The second time i saw the movie i watched it with some friends and someone pointed out that in the very beginning, Donnie wakes up smiling similarly to how he wakes up in his bed at the end. She suggested that maybe this was not only the second option of time, but perhaps the thrid or even more. Maybe Donnie is simply going through this period of time repetedly until he gets it just right and that in the end, the only solution available is that he must die. Someone asked on page 13 about whether it is a continuous cycle and if so, "what came first, the chicken or the egg" type of idea, and this is the only possible solution i have been able to grasp.
Also, i found that the watership down deleted scenes were very interesting and did actually shed more light on the concept of the choice of a rabbit and what that signified. Although the fact that Donnie was only taking placebos confused me a little and i'm not sure what this means aside from the fact that maybe he was never realy a schitsophrenic if he never actually needed medication.
My biggest question is one that it seems almost everyone has and that is, where exactly does the alternate universe begin (and o know that guy who worked on the movie said to let this concept go, but i just can't)? If it is when Frank wakes Donnie up, then by solving the alternate universe he is in turn creating it which makes no sense. It must have been far before that, especialy if Donnie woke up on the hill the previous morning. Just wondering, and thanks. (sorry if this post was really repetitive from what others have been saying)

also, what is the true significance behind jim cunningham's cartoon featuring "Frank"?

I think i might be all alone in this one, but i didn't like this movie at all. For some reason, it didn't capture my attention, except for the bunny. He was kinda scary.
>>By oledirtymilkk (Saturday, 13 Mar 2004 10:25)
Well, there are plenty of questions and opinions that i have about this movie. First of all, i dont think that it was as simple as donnie's life flashing before his eyes. if nobody knew where the jet engine came from, obviously it came from the future. Whether or not you personally add the website into your opinions, the entire movie was based on a devine intervention. The night that Donnie died, there was no real closure to his life. The last time he saw his mother was not necessairly the greatist family moment. The 28 extra days he lived, (and if you include the deleted scenes), he made closure with his mother, father, and sister. Aside from that, there would be no way that Donnie had any idea who Frank and Gretchen were unless he had advoided being killed that night. How would he know who those 2 people were if it was nothing but "life flashing before his eyes"? And if you notice at the end of the movie, every major character woke up from some sort of nightmare! ! ! Ther pervert was crying his eyes out because he had a "dream" that he got cought with his kiddie porn dungeon. Even Frank was touching his eye after he woke up! Gretchen was a REAL person who had NEVER met Donnie, and she made that quite clear in the movie. So to say that Donnie's life flashed before his eyes and that it was just something he "thought up" is completely obsurd. Secondly, one thing im not clear about is whether or not he would of really taken that path if he had not seen that cute little bunny rabbit to begin with. Would he of gone to grandma death's house his last night? If he wouldnt of, neither Gretchen or Frank would of died. Therefore it could of been a completely different path! Nevertheless, after seeing this movie the first, second, and third time... it is definately one of my favorite movies of all time, and definately a movie for you to see if your Agnostic.

i had to answer these questions before everybody gets confused again...
new tomorrow-in the beginning of the movie donnie weaks up on the top of the hill, because he was sleepwalking.it couldn't be second time, because he had only one chance and then the universes would be destroyed. the fact that he was taking only placebos was that it weren't the pills that made him see that shit or made him act that way.he wasn't schitsophrenic, his doctor was thinking he's one because of the stuff he was telling her.in the end she ralised that stuff that doennie see is real and that's why she tried to call his house that night they had halloween party. i'm confused?is alternative universe tangent one?if yes,it starts on october 2,1986 when they showed the clock, while donnie's father was sleeping on couch.it started because of something that created rift in 4th dimension(which i think was donnie's destiny to die which didn't fullfil)...frank didn't start it,on other hand if frank didn't weak up donnie, the jet engine would never fell down on his house.tangent universe would start, everything would continue like it always did and in 3 weeks there would be end of the world.frank had to weak up donnie,so he brings the engine down to kill himself to save the world by fullfilling his destiny.
>>By LiveForChange (Saturday, 13 Mar 2004 19:16)
okay that frank thing actually does make sense, and that's what i thought about the placebos. thanks.
>>By new_tomorrow (Sunday, 14 Mar 2004 09:01)
There are some people who seem to be confused with this movie... or just pretend that they even payed attention to it. That includes people who think that Dr. Thurman called Donnie's parents because she "realized that what donnie was seeing was real". Its pretty obvious that She called them because Donnie admitted that HE FLOODED THE SCHOOL AND BURNT DOWN A HOUSE! ! !. Secondly, the movie took place in the year 1988, not 1986. They only showed that year about 50 times in the movie, and from what i remember in the beginning of the movie there was a debate with the mother and father about the presidential election. I could be wrong but i know im not, but im pretty sure that the election didnt take place in 1986! I hope this information helps those who are confused.
>>By Caleb Novak (Monday, 15 Mar 2004 01:10)
ohh, yeah.i think u are right about that phonecall.anyway, that year wasn't even that important;)

i've recently bought a copy of DD & watched it for the 5th time just now. brilliant film.goes straight into my all time top 10.have discussed the film for hours with my friends & have went through most of the postings on this site..Trouble is that none of the theories put forward can hold up under close scrutiny.Tangent universe etc. & anyway i think the original film should stand on its own .Thats the movie the director intended the world to see.The website & deleted scenes should be ignored. Dont get me wrong,i've thoroughly enjoyed reading through all theories.Brilliant craic.keep up the debate. For what its worth i'l add my theory to the list..Based on the original film. The biggest clue is the opening scene. No Date! We dont know where that scene fits into the sequence of events.I believe the opening scene is in fact the "real" ending to the movie. Its just not in chronological order. If you "start " the film from midnight 2nd october (donnie is asleep). The whole movie from that point is all donnies dream.including both plane crashes & the wakening scene...The end of the dream is the boy waving. Then donnie wakes up.sleeping on a road beside his bike .he looks stunned & then grins cos he realizes thet it was all just a very bizarre, mad dream. Then he cycles home.
