Lord Of The Rings 1: Fellowship Of The Ring

To anybody out there who saw the movies a billion times and then called themselves a real fan, here's a question, how many books by Tolkien do you have? I have the Lord of the Rings(obviously), the Hobbit, and the Silmarillion. I want to get the History of Middle Earth and the Book of Lost Tales 1 and 2. And read the last two pages in the Siege of Gondor in LotR. That would make a pretty cool movie scene, eh?

I myself am a fan of the lotr's trilogy. I have read all books from the hobbit to the return of the king. I've seen both movies and have fellowship on DvD, and watched it like over and over cos it was so good. I too thought i was the biggest fan or was simply obessed.lol, but now it has worn over me. I still love it and im sure when return of the king opens i will be so obessed trying to get tickets to the opening in Wellington. Thats the good thing about living in New Zealand.

Poserporlqulplne,
You like the Lord of the Rings ONLY because of Orlando Bloom? You obviously don't understand the masterpiece that the Lord of the Rings is. And yes, you are a poser from the way you talk.

>>By FutbolFreak   (Saturday, 30 Aug 2003 00:53)

I myself think that the Lord of the Rings movies are the most intriguing movies ever, and that JRR Tolkien deserves way more credit than any person can give him. He plotted this series out very well, inventing languages on top of everything! Drawing out maps and on top of everything, writing the books out. The man is a genius in my opinion.

The best actors in the movie: The Ringwraiths, would own that wuss Legolas any old day...

>>By FutbolFreak   (Friday, 24 Oct 2003 00:28)

what i would like after "the return of the king", I think all films are way too short, although they are beautiful. And after x-mas this year.. no book or film left? Why not a serie? Not only about the fellowship, but also about the history and all info there exists about middle-earth! So that we can see more of all things that happen in the book and we meet tom bombadil and others, so the series will at least be on tv for a year. There will be enough public for this, there is an amazing amount of fans and lovers around the world.

And what about Jen's question, which nobody apparently bothered to answer? It's likely you've found out for yourself by now, but I'll run it by you quickly.

His name is Sméagol. He used to belong to the River Folk, who were much like hobbits, only hundreds of years earlier. He went fishing with his brother Déagol, who caught the Ring gleaming in the water and jumped in to take it. It was Sméagol's birthday that day. He was immediately besotted with the Ring and demanded that his brother hand it over as a birthday present. Déagol refused. Sméagol killed him and took the Ring for himself. He soon grew hideous in character and was cast out of his village. He took the Ring to the caves under the Misty Mountains and hid in the dark until he met Bilbo.

Hi! greeting to all fans worldwide of the lord of the rings! i am new here. well i don't understand with nickie anyway. because many other people have also posters of LOTR even i do. how many have you got?? i watch the movie more than 20 times already (both series) and read it more than ten times. i am not bragging because i know one person who watched it more than 250 times and she is from thailand. she know a lot about it even the history and things. so i don't think you are the "biggest fan" as you say so.........

P.S. I agree with Nilfalathiel Lessien. : )

>>By Zauron   (Wednesday, 19 Nov 2003 12:32)

i am also NOT the biggest fan of LOTR even if i have all the DVDs and VCDs and many other stuff. i just really LOVE it. i like the way Peter Jackson directed the movie and all the sounds and visual effects and stuff. it is totally cool!!!!!!!!

P.S. Does anybody know where i can get the LOTR PS game??

>>By Zauron   (Wednesday, 19 Nov 2003 12:41)

Hi Zauron, thought I better say something here too. Greetings to all Fans, and don't forget fan is short for fanatic!
Nobody has mentioned how clever Tolkien was in using elements out of old Norse & Celtic myth, which give the story that ancient feel. I like the way he gives each of the peoples in the book their own character by the use of names and poems according to each one's language & culture. e.g. The Rohirrim are like a combination of Viking looks with horse culture from Ireland or maybe the Russian Cossacks (Khazaks?), Has any-one noticed there are no "Gods" in the story either? There are spells, Curses, battle cries, Oaths and poems and songs, but I don't remember any prayers. Maybe that's one reason it can appeal to people everywhere?

>>By flamencoprof   (Friday, 21 Nov 2003 15:53)

There are gods in Middle Earth, but not in LOTR.
The Silmarillion, the book which encompasses TLOTR like world history encompasses the French-English 100 year's war, is a complete mythology, starting with the creation of the world. But there is no religious worship, if that's what you mean.
You can read a lot more about Tolkien's use of names, Celtic culture and old Anglo-Saxon poetry on the literature site here. Just look for J.R.R.Tolkien.

I am waiting for the last one too. but too sad it is not here yet..... only until December!!!!!!!!!!! can't wait..........

>>By Zauron   (Monday, 24 Nov 2003 11:44)

I have seen unwillingly. It was bad: hobbits looking like kids (well their audience should be able to identify), elves looking like humans (read the novel, they'll seem to you so unreal, so unlike Mr Smith to take only one example), dwarves looking like nice funny people...
Has anyone read the book before seeing the movie? THAT creates a universe, where trees are scary, hobbits are stupid weaklings who go to the utmost by pure transcendance of their simple nature.
Now, I have seen the second... twice, even less willingly. Try and take some distance: this movie is _so_ long that I shredding away half of the scenes is the only thing that would at least make it tolerably short. Man they take ages just *hesitating*!!!
This movie is a drag. I can't say anything else. Come out people, see great movies, with tension and rhythm, suspense, etc etc, the most basic elements of a movie.
And lastly, I have to say that the movie is not representative of what's in the book, unless you have a very poor mainstream imagination. Well, no harm meant but if you read it as the author must have meant it, then you'd find that Wood's been really dabbering with the concepts of the book and that he's been unable to keep the magic, tha fantasy, the creativity of the original work. Beware: Tolkien's world is not what other people think it might look like, it is beyond the reach of their poor tools and limited imagination.
Minako, stop seeing it or you'll loose your sanity.
So long, pagans...

>>By goulvench   (Wednesday, 26 Nov 2003 00:46)

I understand gouvench's comments. Some elements are very limited compared to the book (which I read three times before seeing the film and once more after I had). Either the film should have been longer and cut up in several more pieces, or it should have been shorter but then there would have been no depth left at all.
All in all I think they're doing a big effort, and I'm not as negative, although I miss the Magic, too. It's all too human, sometimes. On the other hand there's so much love in the making of this whole project - and for once not only money - and it's done by people who all adore Tolkien so much that they want to do him justice, that I am willing to forgive certain shortcomings.
Naturally you can never reach as deep as a book does, because reading goes much slower and has so much more room for detail and background. Still I think very few books have been treated so respectfully and lovingly by film makers as this one.

In line with Futbol's question, I have a similar one: How many of you "obsessed fans" noticed the complete butcheries of plot and character development facilitated by Mr. Jackson?
Did JRR Tolkein draw Faramir as the kind of person who would have almost delivered Frodo into the hands of Denethor (as he tried to do in the second movie)?
Did JRR Tolkein paint Aragorn as a reluctant king, afraid of his heritage and frightened to take up the sword Narsil (as he was painted in the first movie)?
Did Tolkein ever imply that Pippin and Merry were incompetent lushes (as they were portrayed on several occasions in the frist movie)?
Did JRR Tolkein write a tearful goodbye between Aragorn and Frodo at the end of the Fellowship, or did he rather explain that Frodo would only have the courage to leave his friends if he did so at once, and alone, being the kind of person who was unable to ask others to go into danger with him?
I appreciate the work that went into this series--but, in my estimation, what you see on the screen is not Tolkein's work...it is someone else's.
A question for those "obsessed fans" out there, did you know that Tolkein re-wrote parts of the Hobbit so that they would not contradict the LOTR series? Did you know that he went so far as to correct dates, distances from one place to another (most notably between Rivendell and the Shire), even going so far as to redraw the map in the Hobbit so that it was in line with the map he created for LOTR?
I will not comment on whether or not the movies are good--but, I will argue that they are different in substance, plot and character from the books (not just in details). Only the surface shine appears the same...the magic, the good vs. evil, the swordplay, the "chivalry", etc.

JRR Tolkein was a historian and a linguist. He was himself obsessed with the details of our past and the substance which makes up how we communicate. I find it interesting that in trying to be "faithful" to Tolkein's life's work, the director and writers (in their commentaries) are proud of how they got Bilbo's coat exactly right ("right down to the brass buttons on his red vest"), while being equally proud of inserting a scene that did not take place (the tearful goodbye scene listed above) because--to paraphrase one of the writers--she always felt "let down" that Aragorn and Frodo never had a final goodbye. In fact--in her words--that inserted scene "was better" than what happened in the book. Such faithfulness and attention to detail on perhaps the greatest fantasy series written in English...well, it just warms the heart.

You know, now that she mentions it, I always felt that Jesus dying on the cross kind of sucked. I think it would have been better had he ripped his arms off of the two by fours and kicked some Roman butt. I think I will make a movie--faithful to spirit of the Bible, of course--where Jesus does that. Can I credit God as one of the writers?

Just a few thoughts.
--quire

BTW--Read your Tolkein--elves don't have pointy ears.

>>By Undertone   (Thursday, 8 Jan 2004 00:26)

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King was an excellent movie but the ending just kind went on and on and it got extremely boring. But I understand why they had to show that. I love the war scenes expecially with the elephants...the animation is wonderful. I do agree that Orlando Bloom is very cute in this movie. I love when he climbs the elephant :).
