does anyone think 'gallipoli' is a true historical source? I think it is except for the aussie soldiers been so polite cos they were more troublesome and bad behavioured (is that a word?!?!) in real life....just wanna know what others think :-)

The movie really attacks the british, hehe, i particularly like the part that the British had actually arrived but they were drinking tea at the coast. It really is anti-war in my opinion. To me, the blacking out of the screen symbolizes that Archy will be forgotten in time and all his achievements. It's also important to notice that the movie basically compares idealistic, inexperienced Archy with experienced and realistic frank. Archy thinks that fighting for britain will give him the opportunity to become a faster runner than the previous Lasalles, and that war is just an adventure, he never really thinks that it could be the death of him. Frank, on the other hand, he has lived longer and in fact he didn't want to fight this war at the very beginning because british soldiers had killed his grandfather. I think the end was very good, if it was to convince people to become anti-war. This is very true, since whenever soldiers go to war, they ussually have HIGH HOPES that something will happen that will make them live Happily ever after :) isn't that SWEET, but the truth is (and im sounding very anti-war here) that, if u are going to war you are more likely to die than to survive, and you might be used along other soldiers, as carnage as to make the enemy run out of bullets.

the turks must also be taken into consideration. The Turks were attacked by many nations and I think that they were the real heroes who defended their country. I advise you also to read novels or movies written from their perspective.byyyee

Gallipoli, in my opinion, is one of the greatest movies ever made. I was maybe 19 and in the Army when I first saw it on cable. The story was crafted magnificently so that we had an in-depth background of the main character (Archy). As the story unfolds, everything, every little detail resonated with me. I actually cared about the characters. The ending was so dramatic and unexpected that I just sat there watching the credits staring in disbelief! I've read articles on the web where movie-goers in Australia were still there 15 minutes after the film had ended.... Buy this movie, you will not be disappointed!

its probably a bit late now but choose gallipoli, because you can talk about why men signed up, our relations to other countries (triple entante).

its a great movie but its half fake because as you all know they arrived in the wrong place, as well as the fact that it was dark so its hard to determine/portray their arrival it the cove.

Hey guys
I am doing research too for an essay due in two days about gallipoli.
First of all, people tell me all the time that americans really only learn about themselves, and i didnt believe it really (Im not one to easily give in to sterotypes). If you ever come to australia and you watch the news, you will see that about 50% of our news is about worldwide issues. I went to america a few years ago, and when i returned i found out all these tragic things that happened in australia i was shocked that i hadnt heard them once on the news over a month.
what upsets me more is that you ask whether there are aborigines in gallipoli? and that you assume gallipoli is a person! You should be ashamed of yourself.
Im really pushed for time with this essay and i probably shouldnt even be doing this right now but i hate to think that all american teenagers think this way of australians.
The only difference between an american and an australian is that we live closer to antartica and have a different accent, and its about time this was realised.
Australians laugh at people who think we are all crocodile dundees or Steve Irwins.
TO be honest, most australians think steve is an absolute dick who is making money out of false images of australians.
Back to the movie though...its important to do your research on what is the truth about gallipoli so that you dont just believe all that is in the film.
I suggest you go to this site:
www.awm.gov (the australian war memorial) go to australians at war, gallipoli, and read about it there. There are segments of information written by a guy named C.E.W Bean, who was the official historian for the war. Pretty much what he says is true about it.
Peter Wier changed a lot of stuff to have a more dramatic effect,i wont tell you what but some very important pieces of information were taken out, changing the whole story line of the movie, and the truth about the war. Of course the movie makes the australian soldier look even better, and i would have loved for it to be true, but its not. Those characters were fictitious, and so was most of the story line.
Check out the site and take my advice and your on your way to a good mark. I just had an exam on this and got 99% so ur in good hands.
Nic
