Possibly the greatest movie ever. I kid ye not.

>>By defacer   (Tuesday, 30 Aug 2005 16:35)

hmmm........
"greatest movie ever" ???
possibly
possibly
certainly the
"greatest {bent uncle who owns a cottage in the country}
+{2 unemployed actors} movie ever"

>>By Helmet   (Wednesday, 31 Aug 2005 00:20)

Certainly not the greatest movie ever but hilarious and brilliant and good to get drunk while watching.

The only film I've ever seen where every single solitary line is quotable. If I had to pick a favourite it would probably be......"Balls!! We want the finest wines available to humanity. And we want them here. And we want them now".

>>By Lupetta   (Wednesday, 16 Nov 2005 02:11)

My boys, my boys... you are quite right, Lupetta... this is easily my favourite film - why is it not the greatest movie ever?

>>By Sk8a H8a   (Monday, 17 Jul 2006 01:27)

My favourite is 'Then the fucker will rue the day!' Or possibly 'I demand to have cake!'

Well if I tried to explain why it's not the greatest film ever then we'd get into discussing whether there is such a thing as a 'great film' or whether it's all just opinion.

But I've seen films better than it.

Not much better though, and not much funnier.

>>By Flagg   (Monday, 17 Jul 2006 15:27)

So you'd say it's close to being the greatest you've seen? Fair enough - I suppose it's a matter of taste and opinion

Anyone else care to name some favourite quotes from the film? There are too many to chose from for me, but my faves tend to be the odd occasions Monty makes some sense!
"I mean to have you even if it must be burglary!"

>>By Sk8a H8a   (Tuesday, 18 Jul 2006 02:22)

That's making sense??

Well... I think I've seen quite alot of films better than it, but none of them were *much* better than it. So it depends how you define 'close to'.

But now I'm nitpicking, so

dude this film owns XD

>>By Flagg   (Tuesday, 18 Jul 2006 20:46)

Ahaaa, it makes more sense than "No doubt I shall be swept away by some vulgar little tumour"

>>By Sk8a H8a   (Wednesday, 19 Jul 2006 13:59)

Guys the whole film's one long quote.....try and find one that isnt funny apart from the end.

But at the moment, 'Oh you little traitors. I think the carrot infinitely more fascinating than the geranium. The carrot has mystery. Flowers are essentially tarts. Prostitutes for the bees. There is you'll agree a certain je ne ses quoi oh so very special about a firm young carrot.' is my favourite

The end? When he quotes Hamlet in the park? I thought that was funny, not the words themselves, just because the way he talks makes anything funny.

haha
yeah
&
i LOVED the degree of pesonal hygene that
*withnail & i* displayed in their uber-messy, unheated flat....
yep
nuthin' like smearing oneself with *linament ointment* to
ward off the cold
(or constructing a fake bladder with "clean contents"
to avoid a drunk-driving charge)
&
as to "THE END" of the movie........
well
i found it a little sad
poor withnail
left alone to soldier-on as an unemployed thespian
while amigo 'i'
was up & off to don the grease-paint & frolick in the footlights

I don't find the end to be funny... I mean, the whole film is much more than humour but particularly that bit... apparently in the original version, Withnail goes home and kills himself after that - drinks the rest of the wine out of the barrel of the gun and then fires...

Some of the quotes I don't think are particularly funny in themselves... it's more just the way they're said or that character who's saying them - the second time Danny appears, he doesn't have too many amazing quotes ("have either of you got shoes?", "no, this was more like a long, white hat" and "if I medicined you, you'd think a brain tumour was a birthday present" are all fantastic though) but his character is just hilarious and he delivers the lines in such a way that they're really funny - also Monty says some quite ordinary things (just occasionally) which are still funny because it's Monty

Sorry for introducing unfunny quotes, everybody seems to have gone all serious!!

I think a true fan shouts things like 'ponce' and 'scrubbers' at random then chuckles to themself while everyone looks in disbelief and wonder.

Im only about an hour away from Penrith tearoom where you can get some 'cake'. But I think they get pissed off with anoraks like me going up there telling them Im a millionaire.

Hahahaha! Was that scene actually filmed in there? Only I think it'd be ironic if it was coz Withnail says they're making a film and they want to shoot in there...

This is one of the best films I know. As said above, a film of a long quote...........

And I know exactly where the telephone box is !
