Under The Sun

This Swedish movie was on TV a few weeks ago. I hadn't heard of it before, but I did some checking. It's based on a British novel, The Little Farm, by H. E. Bates. It's been made into a film before, but this time the story takes place in Sweden instead of Britain. Some people won't like this film, but it will appeal to viewers who like sentimental love stories.
Olof, a lonely socially awkward farmer, puts an ad in the paper asking for a housekeeper. An attractive, slightly mysterious woman turns up and is hired. After a while, she seems to fall in love with Olof, but we're left wondering whether such an elegant woman could really be in love with this likeable but childlike farmer. Is she really in love or is she taking advantage of a gullible oaf? Our doubts are heightened when Olof's younger friend uncovers a secret the woman has been hiding.
There's some suspense as the question is resolved, as well as some heartbreak when it turns Olof has in fact been betrayed. But by whom? I won't say because that would spoil the film. Is there a happy ending? You'll have to see it to find out.
