Did not understand the movie especially the ending. If the mother and 2 children were dead why didn't they know they
were dead since the three household help knew they were dead. And who were the people gathered around the table when Kidman grabbed the papers they were writing on?

To answer some of these questions the first poster asked: I think they all knew they we're dead. You have to know if your dead or not. The movie is a complete oposite of what you think through out the whole movie. The family you saw sitting at the table in the end we're infact "the other" people. Rememeber when Annie drew the picture of the family near the beginning of the movie? The old lady with the bad breath? She was apparently was trying to get the spirits (Grace and her children) out of the house. I think it was brillent how Grace met her husband in the fog. At first I thought it was kind of cheesy how he just shows up from the war but then to find out he had died in war and it was his spirit. There are a few parts I don't understand myself though. Why did all the doors have to be shut before a new one was opened? And also, who was playing the piano when Grace had that fight with the door? Some parts of the movie are still a mystery.

All doors have to be locked before the next is opened because it's the only way that you can be sure that no light will get in. Since light is admitted in certain areas of the house so those who don't have the light allergies can function, it's necessary to keep doors locked to prevent the children from wandering into lit areas. As for the piano, that clue is given by the girl early on. She reveals that there's a family living there -- a man, his wife, and their child Victor. She says that the man is a pianist. He's the one playing the piano, and you can assume that he's plenty freaked out when Nicole Kidman comes snooping around the piano because as she starts opening doors the piano stops. He's freaked because there's a ghost in the house -- Nicole. By the way, would it kill you people to take some pride in your posts and spell check once in a while. The internet is a great communication tool, so why do we have to communicate like 6 yr. olds?

I think the movie was well scripted, greatly planned and executed. Nicole and the kids were great - especially the little boy Nickolas.

The closing of doors before opening the next and keeping the curtains on and that photosensitivity of kids was all created to keep the lights dim throughout the movie - makes the house spookier than with all the light ... and also provided the director a way to send the ultimate shock to its viewers in the end by mysterious disappearance of curtains. What I found best about the movie is that throughout the movie audience sympathize with Grace and suspect her three helpers for the menace she is going through and in the end are left wondering that just as humans are afraid of ghosts, so are ghosts. The ghosts too are afraid of the living. With that thought, I can sleep better!

i want to know WHY she killed her children, i mean, i understand that she could have gone a bit crazy from being alone, and her husband not being around, but, a bit more info would have very interesting. but then thats why its so interesting - because things are still left unsaid.

why did the father show up, why was he so disturbed when he was in the house, and why did he have to leave?

>>By unHookt   (Sunday, 22 Jun 2003 07:39)

the others is a great film but

About why Grace killed her kids... if you just pay attention to her personality throughout the movie, you'll see that she has wild mood swings. She cares about her children, but still manages to hurt them (emotionally and physically). You can also see that she has serious psychological problems when she's talking to her husband when he tells her he has to leave. She has this "oh poor me" complex. Also anyone confined to darkness in a dreary house day and night has to be pretty messed up.

If you'll just pay attention to the movie, you can see that her main drive in staying sane (well, almost sane LOL) locked up in that creepy house is her Catholocism. So of course she is in denial. According to the beliefs that she clings to so dearly, she would be in a different afterlife if she had truly died. (Heaven or Hell and whatnot... dunno lol I'm not a Catholic). Throughout the entire movie there is foreshadowing that she is in denial. It's mentioned a couple of times by the kids "remember that day when mommy went mad". So, I think she somehow knows she's dead but won't admit it.

I thought this was a great movie, and nothing like the sixth sense really. The only thing I don't understand is her husband coming back. And the fog that forbids her from leaving her home??? BTW go back through the movie and look at things like her slamming the door, ripping the dustcovers off the old furniture, at the end chanting ''this house is ours'' etc. If you looked at those things from the perspective of the living family, you'll see that those are exactly the things that happen in supposed 'haunted houses' it's really interesting.

Sorry for the long post :P

>>By therion   (Tuesday, 30 Mar 2004 00:16)

I really enjoyed this movie and didn'd see it as a knock off since the whole story line is different than anything else. I think nicole does awesome in every preformance she does; this one is no exception. I think they used the fog to keep her around her house because some people say when there are troubled spirits, they are condemned to the place they died until they go to the light... that's what I think anyways. It was good and it gave you a lot to think about after it was over.

I find this film very creepy indeed. But it depends on what scares you. Gory, bloody images don't frighten me half as much as the suggestion that something might happen, that someone might be hidden behind the door, that something awful might be found in the box ... My imagination makes it infinitely worse.
I very much liked the atmosphere in which everything was set. It added to the tension. I think the fog explanation Astarra gave is right. It also shows that ghosts and the living occupy two completely different worlds, although the seem to overlap ...

A very good movie ,very creepy.makes you think.

>>By BloodRayne   (Friday, 2 Apr 2004 23:23)

I wonder... ...what was the superstition again about the dead having their pictures taken and with their eyes shut? Can anybody help me out on this one? I found that really cool. I'm also wondering if there are similar photos as such that can be found over the internet.

>>By Demented   (Wednesday, 14 Apr 2004 11:49)

The photos of dead people was what I found most creepy!!!! Why on earth do you want to find similar photos on the net?????! You won't be able to shut your eyes again. However, all I know is possibly that it is a victorian tradition.

I have a question! I know the Father shows up to make Grace go back to the house, but I don't understand why he is so zombie like in the house and why the 1st thing he says to her is " Sometimes i bleed"!

>>By Huney   (Monday, 18 Oct 2004 06:46)

pretty good film. not a revelation. Had its scary moments but.... it's not the 6th sense is it?

>>By Flagg   (Tuesday, 19 Oct 2004 21:06)

oh, sexat rith.. is not a copycat of six sence... two similar in time.. a coincidence... the AmenĂ¡bar film was in post production when the Shyamalans movie released... the movie was filmed already... just a coincidence. you are unfair if you say that is a copycat of the six sence...see the other amenĂ¡bar movies ("open your eyes" for example)and you will see that the surprising end is one of the characteristics of that spanish director : )
