The Deer Hunter

Forum

this movie has to be one of the greatest Vietman War movies ever made. I found that some scenes particularly at the beginning ran a bit long such as the wedding reception scene, but overall its such a powerful movie. Christopher Walken is absolutely amazing especially at the end he can say so much without even talking. But full credit has to be given to Robert De Niro not only is he as tough as he ever is in the movies he also portrays a sensitive side that is so real on screen, i just cant believe im the only person who wants to discuss this movie!!!!!

I prefer Walken's performance to De Niro's, but still, that's like saying I prefer God to Jesus.

Stunning movie. Although overall both Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now are superior portrayals of the hell that was Vietnam, it is certainly the most emotionally taxing war movie ever made. The characterisation is so effective that I found the war scenes themselves almost impossible to watch, and I know it's kind of cliched now, but the Russian Roulette scene has to be amongst the greatest pieces of work in cinematic history.

I actually really didnt see what the big deal was with Apocalypse Now. I just found it to be a lot of suspense and nothing really happening after it all!!!
Whereas with the deerhunter although some of the scenes were longer then needed I couldnt take my eyes off the screen, particularly in the last Russian Roulette scene. It just hearbreaking stuff to watch.

Apocalypse Now is not about action, it's about one man's descent into hell/madness. It's effective in a whole different way from The Deer Hunter, which is more emotional where Apocalypse Now is very cerebral.

Have you seen Full Metal Jacket?

I have been married to two Vietnam veterans. One of them actually played Russian roulette on his R&R to HongKong. I am glad the wedding scene was long. I love Czech weddings and they are virtually identical to that one which was Russian.

This is a great film. I think the wedding scene was a bit too long, I nearly lost interest, but then when it skipped a load of time and suddenly they were in Vietnam it had a particularly big effect. I loved the Russian roulette scenes.

No Stinkfist I've never seen Full Metal Jacket would you recommend it? i think the Deer hunter, not to say i didnt love it, had a bit of a pacing problem. I mean one minute youre in their home town the next in Vietnam. i know that was probably the intention of the director but i didnt like it so much. But other than that I cant complain, the amazing acting is enough.

I do so love DeNiro's face as he tried to maintain control in the hootch over the water, trying to make the Russian roulette thing work to save their lives. Man, that was priceless and excellent.

Full Metal Jacket does make the case of what I concur with both my exes and also with James Webb, former Sec. of the Navy, medal of honor winner, and author of Fields of Fire, a former field infantry lieutenant in the Marine Corps, that abuse as a way of training infantrymen is bullshit.
Lee Ermey (who is himself a wounded Vietnam veteran) is excellent in the role of the abusive drill instructor. His spiel of abuse is comical and creative and it is very enjoyable til that thing in the bathroom. Lorna

Not the best movie I have ever seen. If I hear the theme song play one more time Im gonna bite my wrists! I agree with the previous comments that were made that Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now were better films.

I did enjoy the tense Russian roulette scenes though. But if you want to see an excellent Russian roulette scene rather watch 187 with Samuel L. Jackson. It doesnt have anything to do with the war, its somewhat worse because its just a normal American teacher who has to endure this.

Apocolypse Now, Full Metal Jacket and The Deer Hunter are THE defining Vietnam war movies. The Deer Hunter is more thoughtful, slower paced and more emotional than the other two but none the worse for it.
I notice that some of you on here have criticised it for being to slow earlier in the movie, but the in depth characterisation at the beginning really pays off later because you actually care what happens to each of the people in the story.
If you want a brainless action movie rent something else, there's plenty of them in your video store.
If however you want an intelligent, realistic and beautifully directed film played to perfection by the best cast you'll ever see then rent The Deerhunter.

"too smart for a nickname" you say nothing happened in Apocolypse Now?! Are you sure you watched this movie?
The Helicopter Attack on the village in battle formation with Wagner booming from the loudspeakers was nothing? Only one of the best scenes in movie history.
Robert Duvall standing upright without flinching on the beach talking about surfing while bullets fly past his head. (shortest on screen performance to win an oscar)
The brutal killing of innocent civilians on the river boat.
Opening titles showing Napalming of the forests to the Doors classic " The End" followed by Martin Sheen's character having a nervous breakdown in his hotel room.(a scene in which Martin Sheen actually had a heart attack)

The sight of the American Forces having a full scale party in the middle of a warzone with 'bunny girls' dancing on stage. (I would scoff at that scene if i didn't know it actually happened)

Iconic scenes like Martin Sheen's head appearing out of the water.
Robert Duvall "I love the smell of Napalm in the morning"

To name but a few... and you say nothing happened? You surely didn't watch Apocolypse Now.

"Lorna" ... You little name dropper you... *laughs*

It wasn't a Russian wedding it was Polish, being as they were all from Polish immigrant families.

"Honey Bunny"... Are you seriously comparing "187" with "The Deer Hunter" ? the russian roulette scene in "The Deerhunter" is in a different league to "187" it's one of the best scenes in movie history where "187" is well ... just a random mediocre half assed nothing film.

I love The Deer Hunter. It's my most favorite movie, ever.
It's really heartbreaking.
And Walken's gaunt face is really haunting.
