Rebel Without A Cause

Forum

I just have to say that this movie is one of THE greatest films of all time. James Dean and Natilie Wood were both outstanding and its a shame both of their careers ended early.

Shit.. Plato?! Well, thank god, Dennis lived on. With out him there'd be no Blue Velvet.

no Dennis as Frank
in "Blue Velvet" ???
( "daddy wants to f...... !!!")

What I never understood about the phrase Rebel without a cause is that it makes it sound like a political rebellion is the only kind of rebellion. Or have I misinterpreted it?

hey bob. . .it's been a while. . .

i can see what you're saying. . .the title does seem to imply that rebellion has to have some kind of greater cause. . .

but i feel in the case of this movie. . .it was made at a time when kids acting out was still shocking. . .

somehow i think the title is just addressing that this kid has loving parents. . .and an affluent upbringing. . .and he still gets trashed. . .and in fights. . .for no reason at all. . .or at least it seems like no reason at all. . .honestly under the surface. . .he has his reasons. . .

so to the naked eye it appears that he's rebelling for nothing. . .why would some white, rich, adored kid do these things???

i love this movie. . .watching james dean is refreshing. . .he's natural. . .and it's pleasurable to see. . .i honestly believe that if he had lived on. . .he would have done great things. . .

Leslie, how about a great rebels of cinema festival this Summer? We can all try to watch anew and discuss. I would nominate Cool Hand Luke to be included too. What do you think? Anyone else have any good nominations?

I think it's a great movie that shows life in the 50s.
Much less talk to them.
Talk?! No one talks to children.
No they just tell them.
James Dean is just awsome!!!

ABOUT THE TITLE:

the title "rebel without a cause" is taken from a psuchological case study, and i quote:

"The screenplay (by Stewart Stern from an adaptation by Irving Shulman of an original storyline synopsis by director Nicholas Ray) was based on an actual case study (contained in Dr. Robert Lindner's 1944 factual book titled Rebel Without a Cause: The Story of a Criminal Psychopath) of a delinquent, imprisoned teenage psychopath in the post-war years. The film was originally titled The Blind Run - the same as the title of the series of vignettes, both violent and strangely erotic, that Ray had penned. The actual film's title, Rebel Without a Cause, was the same as the title of Lindner's psychological study - signifying the rebellious and idealistic protagonist's search for a 'cause' - honesty and decency in a hypocritical world."
