Longtime Companion

Forum

I logged on to find something about this movie, Longtime Companion, but found there was nothing. So, I guess I must write about it myself. This movie tells the story of the early days of the AIDS epidemic. I was growing up in the eighties, and discovering sex, so the spectre of AIDS loomed over our heads pretty heavily. I am straight, but pretty much every friend I have is a gay male. AIDS is an ever-present concern. The movie brings me back to the days when the virus was first being recognized. It helps me recall those days of innocence, when sex didn't kill. The movie focuses on a group of friends in New York, who have been affected by the ravages of the disease. I have read a review that says that the Mary Louise Parker role was unneccesary to the film. That may be, but-- the Parker role was made to represent people like myself. Although, I am a heterosexual female, I have seen the damage done by the HIV virus, and I have endured it's loss. I thought that Bruce Davidson was very effective as a man who lost his partner after a heroic battle with AIDS that involved hallucination to total incapacitation.
Without giving away the ending of the movie, I will say that: I stayed strong throughout the film.. Until the last scene where my love and fear and every other emotion came flooding back and I wept like a baby
