Branagh. It has the right feeling. But I would have to say that the Gibson version is much better then the new modern one with Eathan Hawk. Wow. I didn't know some one was souless enogh to destroy Hamlet like that movie did. It was painfully horrendous.

i definitely think the mel gibson version was the best and i agree with envybloom that the ethan hawk version was a complete travesty of the original hamlet. any comments on specifically why any one version was better than any other??

I have to say that the Gibson version is way better than the Branagh, which really surprised me when I first watched them both. It seems like Branagh didn't want to alienate the non-Bardy audience so pulled out all the stops to make it exciting - thus he comes down from the chandelier when killing the king. I was very impressed by the ghost in Gibson - in comparison to the Branagh ghost which was so full of special effects that it obscured the scene. Also, Kate Winslet seems so full of social airs and has no naive innocence to fall back on in her madness scenes, its hard to feel sympathy for her.
I have more, but that's enough for now!
PS Ethan Hawke - yes, sucky.
