what is gigi exactly about, is her grandmother trying to sell her off to a playboy man?

Her Grandmother understands the nature of the "beast"--as her Aunt states, "Marriage isn't forbidden to us--but instead of marrying at once, we marry at last". Indeed, her Aunt and Grandmother, understanding the "way things are" for "poor" people, trains Gigi to be a companion--mistress--as was the norm in those days. Problem is, the gent Gaston falls for her, and complicates the issue.

I got confused by that too . . . I thought his wanting to marry her made everything a little nicer. I did not really understand that he was going to use her as his mistress until just now!

The music is cute. Were those french accent assumed or actual? Some of them sounded a little . . . monty pythonish. But I have not meet many people from France.
