yes, I have. I own it on dvd.

it's a bit odd, but worth the effort if you're into horror.

don't get the adam grossman remake; the remake was Candace's idea, but she was cut from it by hollywood greed

I think this a particular haunting film. Having seen it years ago, i purcased the video, when it first came out. Though it's obvious that the budget was low, the acting & the entire conception are fantastic. One key scene, out of many, is when she is playing the organ in the church. From beautifull, spiritual music, the playing gradually transposes into evil, dischordant, gothis sounds. The pastor, who, at first is listening in a state of rapture, becomes startled, then enraged, at the transformation of the young woman's playing. It appears thru most of the film that she is trapped in a limbo between life & death.......As Bela Lugosi said in DRACULA: "There are far worst things awaiting man,.....than death". Carnival of souls is simply one of the best films of all time (in the fantasy, horror catigory).

First saw as a little kid. We lived in Tooele Utah about 20 miles away from the Great Salt Lake and Salt Lake City. The pavillion out on the lake in the movie where the main character goes was called the Salt-Air and it was a formerly an amusement park with one of the largest wooden roller coasters in the States. The lake receded and the bad publicity from the death of a little girl being thrown from the roller coaster helped to put it out of business and by the time I was growing up 5 years after the movie was made it was in even shabbier shape and suspiciously burned down in July of 1967. The place was owned by the state of Utah at the time and because of the weight of the mosque like architecture and the metal reinforcements required to provide strength to the building the state could not afford to tear it down. There was some suspicion that it was arson, how convenient. Public safety hazard conveniently goes poof.
Someone had the vision to rebuild it as an amusement park and again play on the fact that you can float on the Great Salt Lake without knowing how to swim because of the high salt content of the water....BUT; the lake rose to levels never seen in decades sometime in the 90s and marooned the "New" Salt-Air
The palce had the same effect on me as it did the main character in Carnival of Souls, there was something haunting about it, especially as not long before it burned down my Mother and little brother went out to see it. You could take a little tour and go out into the dance pavillion and look out over the lake. You could make a donation as well as the plan was to restore it.
It was really eerie to see it from the highway, especially at night, and the place made you want to go out there. It was genuinely disturbing, so seeing it play so prominently in a movie made me a fan of this picture from the time I first saw it on TV.
You can see a lot of influece from this movie in "Night of the Living Dead" as well as others, and Candace Hilligoss has a very ethereal prescence. The stark camera angles and actual night for night shots [instaed of cheesy day for night with a filter] really adds depth and atmosphere. So too does the dubbed conversation in the early scenes at the accident site. This gives sort of a disembodied effect to the scenes.
There's something especially creepy about this picture. It plays like an old "One Step Beyond" episode rather than a Twighlight Zone. AAA+

I'm planning on getting a tattoo, a half-sleeve featuring Herk Harvey's ghoul from Carnival of souls, but I'm having trouble finding a good picture to use. Does anyone know where I can find one? I've been scouring the internet, I'm hoping to find something from his first appearance, when Mary is driving into town. I want from the chest up, if anyone can help me, I'd really really appreciate it. Send the link or picture to So_Tigers_Huh@expn.com.

Just bought it after seeing it a few years ago on late night T.V. It fits well into my classic horror movie collection (TCM, Romero movies, Suspiria, etc). I, too, was fascinated by the pavillion where it was filmed - sad to hear it burned down but would've been sadder to hear it had been built over.

Glad to see there are others who like it as much as I do.
