I personally think that it's called "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" because Virginia Woolf was a person who wrote about reality, and constantly showed people reality.. and Martha, as you can tell, is terrified by reality, hence the imaginary dead son. She cries because reality is coming through and that they don't really have a son.. and the movie keeps bringing up the theme of reality vs. illusion, and shes afraid of reality. That's why at the very end when George is asking "Who's afraid of Virgina Woolf!?" she screams "I AM!" >>By Me Hi. I rented and watched this movie today and although I thought the acting was amazing I did not understand the story line all to well. Can someone tell me as if they were talking to a five year old what the hell this movie was about? Thanks >>By mark The title of the play was originally called "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?" but Edward Albee did not have permission to use "Big Bad Wolf" by whoever owns the rights to "Three Little Pigs" so it was changed to "Virginia Woolf." The play has no connection to Virginia Woolf. >>By Bye The "Big Bad Wolf" is facing the reality of one's own short-comings. How easy it is to deal with life behind the facade of make believe and belittling other people's faults. Its about a group of people who fight about whatever for hours on end, because they are living a lie. Martha and George are not facing the reality that there son is dead. They want to hide it, pretened it never happened. The feelings they should be expressing to one another becomes hostility.
