Discussion: The Day The Earth Stood Still

As a child, I can remember sitting in front of the TV and watching this movie on a Saturday morning, sometime in the late 60s. I'm considerably older, and it still captures my attention. I think there's something wonderful about a movie that holds up over the years. Oh sure, the special effects don't equal Star Wars, but what is there on the screen is FINE for the story. You can tell it was made with care (there are no cheesy strings holding up the space craft. There are only two other films from this period that holds up; THEM, and FORBIDDEN PLANET. This is because for what special effects there were, they took the time to do it right. What did all these movies have in common? THEY TOLD ONE HECK OF A GOOD STORY. They did it believably and with an obvious affection for the material.
