Run Lola Run

Forum

One of the best flash-forwad German movies. Some of you might be disappointed by the story, but its fast storyline will keep you entertained throughout the movie. Grade "B+"

sooooo cool. all the circles and spirals. totally awesome. but dont see The Princess and The Warrior. Same director and Franka's in it, but it sucks majorly.

As far as foreign films go, not many make enough of a splash to get any real attention here in the states. Recent successes like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon have managed to break thru into the mainstream US culture, but we are limiting ourselves to fantasy-type films, and looking over the more serious dramas that hold a lot of promise. One such film that did receive a lot of praise from the critics, but didn't get a lot of play while it was in theaters, is the stylish thriller, Run Lola Run. Set in Germany, this unique movie tells the story of Lola (Potente) and Manni (Bleibtreu), a young couple that is forced into a dangerous situation. Manni makes his living as a thief and thug for a powerful crime boss. Manni is working a job one day and picks up 100,000 marks to deliver to his boss, but when Lola isn't there to pick him up, Manni is forced to take the subway home. While on the train, some police officers show up, and Manni flees the scene by instinct, but forgets the money. Now Manni's in danger, the boss is going to meet him in 20 minutes, and if Manni doesn't have the cash, he will die. It's now up to Lola to find a way to get the money Manni needs and get it to him, before the boss shows up, or Manni does something stupid, like robbing a store. The cool thing about this movie is not only the way it takes place in nearly real-time, but the story is told 3 different times, each time the choices Lola makes affect the lives of the people she comes into contact with. For example, Lola runs into a woman out for a walk with her child, each time she does so, we see what happens to the woman thru a quick series of snapshots, foretelling her future. This happens with a few different people and the outcome is different each time. I was a little set off by the way the audio translation of German into English didn't always match up very well with the subtitles, but the voice acting was good enough to make up for it. Potente carries the film very well as she frantically flies over town looking for a way to save her lover, and she will be making (what I believe to be) her American film début later this year along side Matt Damon in The Bourne Identity. The disc offers basic extras; a trailer for the film, talent files, a commentary track with the director and star, and a music video. Despite a few language inconsistencies, the story is original and exciting. It's too late to see it in the theaters, but if you look around your local rental places you shouldn't have any trouble finding this one. I highly recommend it and give this movie a solid 4.

We were forced to watch run Lola run in my german class but i thought it was actually good. Has anyone ever seen the simpson's episode where they did a sort of spoof on the film?

We just watched this my German class - I really liked it. It's not like anything I've ever seen before...it actually reminded me of those "Choose Your Own Adventure" books when I was a kid - small decisions can change the course of your life.

BTW, does anybody know where I can find the soundtrack? All these songs are in my head now and I don't know them...*forlorn*
