So whats the appeal? A "stand by me "for the 90's?

>>By fferricoxide   (Friday, 20 Dec 2002 06:45)

Yo people. It sucks my local blockbusters doesn't feature the river's edge.

I am glad that this film was kept under the lame lights of main stream. I was inspired by this film to write a script about a murder that I indirectly missed in my high school days.

im pretty mad that the blockbuster or hollywood video dont carry it. one of the greatest movies ever.

>>By sedusa   (Tuesday, 11 Feb 2003 04:01)

The appeal is that its a true story, it's not the stand by me of the 90's, especially seeing as the release date here is wrong and it came out in the 80's.
And just because blockbuster doesn't have it, doesn't mean it sucks, blockbuster only stocks "hit movies" movies that are going to be rented out a million times over. and for the most part may not be a good movie, but you'll rent it just because some fat guy in chicago gave it a thumbs up.

I'm in the process of watching this film and so far It is one of the funniest things I have ever seen! Keanu Reevs is in "Bill and Ted" mode and Crispin Glover is the absolute greatest thing to watch in the movie. He's so whiny and such. Good times and god bless that man.

I thought it was wild! It was so funny! The whole movie was great in an offbeat way. I love the way the kids interacted with the mother. "Where do my children go at night?" had to be the funniest line of the movie!

woah whoever wrote "i totally dress like crispin in the rivers edge" is my new god. i'm totally in love with crispin in river's egde. he's such the crazy, adventuress, (speed-freak),metal head, all around cool guy. i love how he reactes to the murder, trying to cover it up and make it like an action movie, but his stonner friends cant seem to get into the adventure of it and thus his friend gets caught. so realistic. so amazing. also i fing there is a hint of the writer and/or director being an old biker gang movie fan, since A.)the king of all biker movies is in it (dennis hopper)and he is held at a mysterious cool old guy status, and B.)crispin wants his friends to stick together like a gang, saying rules taht have come up i biker movies and C.)motorcycle jackets are worn but no motorcycles are used. this is my favorite movie because it is not like any other movie in the world.

Thats right,it was released in 1987.Personally a favourite of mine, and i believe Crispin Glovers and Keanu Reeves best work.
Dennis Hopper i think is a bit underated, but on the whole a awesome but bleak masterpiece of what life and school can be like(thank God that was not my life).Once again ,Crispin was awesome, possibly near the point of overacting but thankfully never crossed that line, and why can't all Keanu movies be the same calibre of acting as this one,but maybe i should just shut up ,he's the one making millions of bucks a year, not me.

Great Movie. I saw it and was fascinated by the story and the way in which the various players interacted. For those who are interested... It is the true story of 14 year old Marcy Conrad who was murdered in 1981 by her 16 year old boyfriend Anthony Broussard. He was believed to have sexually assaulted her and two other girls in addition to the murder but was never brought to trial. He avoided the death penalty by pleading guilty to 1st degree murder and may by now have been paroled from his 25 to life sentence.
Broussard brought his friends to view the body and he bragged about the murder. What made things so astonishing was that none of the friends reported the crime and some threw rocks at the body and stole souvenirs. Contrary to the movie the body was discovered by an 18 year old not involved in the circle of friends who reported it to police. I do not know if any of the friends were prosecuted for their failure to notify authorities.
The movie did not draw much at the box office but did make almost 3 times more than its production costs. I think this movie is a must see for anyone who enjoys well written and well acted movies. A plus for me is the story follows the actual events fairly closely. Some "based on a true story" movies are so far off they spoil the actual events they are trying to depict. This movie however, is engrossing from beginning to end.
One note. It was a Hemdale film from 1986. According to IMDB the river scenes were filmed in Sacramento, CA and other scenes were shot at Verdugo Hills HS in Tujunga CA. Enjoy.

Thoroughly enjoyable movie. I remember buying and watching it years ago but, re-discovering it in my attic space just recently, I decided to watch it again ...... then again ...... then again .... etc. The story is incredible and beautifully portrays a 'mile stone moment' in the lives of a group of wayward teenagers. As much as I respect Glover as an actor, I felt he was let down by the director in that he looked like he was slightly over acting his part. I think if we saw him taking Amphetamine Sulphate in more explicit detail it would have better justified his mania - and seemed less like poor over acting (The few pills he takes in his car didn't really emphasis his drug abuse effectively). Dennis Hopper was once again the legend he is. Anyone know were I can get some 'Feck weed' to try? That was also the deadest looking dead girl in movie history! Brilliant movie!

i am totally in love with crispin glover. as a gay. i think he is '''da man. i want to hit that from the back. i idolize lane. i try to talk like him and i always say """I''M serious TIM!!!"""" tim is my boyfriend and he hates it when i do that. it's too bad he doesnt like this movie because it would make our relationship a lot stronger.
