Discussion: Outlaw Josey Wales

As I write this I am watching Josey Wales on TCM in widescreen. We are at the scene where the bounty hunters think they are going to capture him.It is a great example of the high standard of acting that Eastwood demands from even those who have small parts in his films. Despite being unfashionably right wing in an increasingly intolerant Hollywood (or liberal as it is erroneously called) he has no problems in attracting fine actors to appear in his movies.
Why is he so good? Because he has the same gift that John Huston had. He knows how to film a good script without screwing it up.You dont see his directing, just like you did'nt see Jack Hawkins acting,or really good editing. It is only the bad stuff you see.
Now Chief Dan George is on and I'm wondering why he did'nt get an oscar for his performance? Of course in the seventies Eastwood was far too out of fashion to attract serious critical examination. Nobody looked at the acting in such films anyway-were they not just 'shoot-em-ups' ? I mean the people who liked them did'nt even have university degrees, for Gods' sake!
We need more Clint Eastwoods
