House Of The Spirits

Forum

I read this book once when i was younger, and again just this last week. i am afraid that i'll hate the movie because it doesn't even mention anything about Blanca's daughter Alba, who by the way, is the one who wrote the whole story through finding all of Clara's notes. and i don't understand why Ferula, played by Glen Close, would have such a large part in the movie. I know that movies are never the same as books, but it is nice to rent a movie sometimes a while after reading a book just to remember what you loved about the storyline. I think that this is one of the most fantastic books dealing with love and tragedy and the complications of delicate relationships within families. I just wish the more closely resembled the book!

I was highly disturbed by the butchering done to Isabel Allende's masterpiece. The magical realism in the novel isn't even as challenging to grasp as Gabriel Garcia Marquez's is, however, the movie failed to stay true to the novel with the magical realism or with something as simple as character representation. Blanca is portrayed confusingly as both the character Blanca and as Alba's character from the book. The script is lilted with holes in the storyline which confuse the audience. In addition, it is lacking in the focus of interests from the amazing novel. Esteban Garcia is poorly introduced and thus his part in the end of the movie isn't as startling. Important characters are missing...anyone know where Blanca's two brothers went?? What about Miguel? Allende's novel is a beautiful work of 4 generation of women and their families in a country that suffers from political turmoil. Someone stop Hollywood!! Sue them Allende!! If you are considering watching this movie, don't listen to the New York Times, their commentary is shameful. Read the book.

Usually, I walk out of theaters when I don't care for a film, but a friend was with me, so I chose to be polite. I have never regarded Isabel Allende to be a great writer. Lygia Fegundes Telles (from Brazil) or Claire Lispector (also from Brazil) fit that category. But being taken into a theater and seeing a mediocre book turned into a bad film was not a pleasant experience. Don't worry. I still speak to that person.
