Budapest is so beautiful in the movie- a symbol of dignity

A pathetic effort to uncover the magic power of legendary song of Seress of same title. Just like Van Goh's paintings show human precisions and madness are inseparable twins, the melody of Seress's "Gloomy Sunday" may indicate that, the highest level of human inner feelings, is such a unique mixture of sweetness and bitterness that life and death are equalized. Such music is timeless and storyless and definitely far beyond any stereo type of treatment on triangle love-affairs and Nazi's occupations, as portrayed in this movie.

Nevertheless, a touching movie at first impression for those don't know the legendary story behind it. Good acting from all four leading actors.

I killed myself

>>By scud   (Monday, 13 Jan 2003 02:29)

Don't think the song killed anyone. You won't kill yourself over a song unless you've already been considering it. Songs don't kill people. People kill people :P

Anyway, the movie was beautiful, as is the song. Great acting.

I'm from China. The movie is very very good. it's better than Hollywood. I was gotten many harvests from the movie. I'm a student. and I was taught how to live in my lifetime. I regard that the movie Gloomy Sunday will be better and will be popular with everyone in the world. I love you--Gloomy Sunday

My husband fell in love with Ilona (she's rather attractive!) and she's quite captivating. The song is haunting and in real life a Nazi in the Auschwitz concentration camp requested a jewish musician to play the song over 9 times and believe it or not, he shot himself after hearing it. A beautiful film...

Hi, if you want to hear this song, you can go to :
http://myhome.naver.com/lover719/ost.html
There are many versions of Gloomy Sunday, My favourite piece is at :
http://www.punkasspunk.com/mp3/Hernadi%20Judit%20-%20Szomoru%20Vasarnap.mp3
I love this particular piece because the vocal is full of feelings and very depressing. I have been hearing this over and over again, I felt that this song do KILL People as the melody and jazzy vocal could let the listener indulge into another depressing world which would lead the victim into the dark side of live. Some who could not handle the depression, kill themselve.....

I disagree with Li as he is not sensitive enough to think deep about the situation. But he is true that People kills People as the People who creates the song do Kills...... Gloomy Sunday.....

I'm Australian and chanced upon the film on our SBS station, and was immediatley caught by the strong emotional undertone. I have since listened to many versions of the song and every time I feel joyous/sad/awake.
I think the peace and sense of something further awaiting beyond death may be a clue towards the high suicide rate, also the song was released during a time of great economic depression, life was tough, the song was beautiful, people fell in love with it and the romance of leaving this world for another.

i also saw the song on sbs and found the movie fantastic! anyone who says that it is a stereotypical portrayal of nazi persecution and a love triangle has obviously never been in love. the song combines everything from sheer beauty to extreme sadness. I have been looking for the modern version that features at the end of the film and have been as such without luck, can anyone help?

The haunting melody of the title piece is so beautiful, as too, is the film. I thought the acting, direction and cinematography was excellent. Does anyone know where you could get the piano sheet music for Gloomy Sunday that is played in the film?

Does anyone know if it is available on DVD?

@Norman: I'm female and believe me, I'm probably oversensitive. I just think that it takes more than a song to kill someone. There are an unbelievable number of terribly depressing songs and if we were to let them all get to us, we'd be in big trouble. Like naridu says, there are lots of other factors contributing to the suicides. I'm not saying a song doesn't have the power to influence your emotions, but ultimately it is your decision to take your life.

I Just watched the movie last night on SBS, and Loved it! The song theme is a haunting one, one that makes you think of past events. Never has a movie/song evoked such an emotional response! Five Stars!

I've watched it on SBS last night. Thank you SBS :-)
One thing that I'm sure of, is that I haven't seen such high quality movie for a long time. The music is superb.
5 Stars!

The DVD is available in Korea. It is NTSC region 3 and has English and Korean subtitles. It seems uncut but the censors have covered up the girl's private parts in some of the scenes.

You can buy it at this site:

I think I have been addicted to Gloomy Sunday since I watched it at the movie festival in Melbourne. SBS has not been very fair showing the movie so late at night. This is definitely the most untraditional solution to the love triangle situation, yet so simple and peaceful. I wish more men could watch the film. A perfect captivating love story, revealing so much more than just a relationship...
Does anyone know where one can buy video copies of the movie?

>>By El   (Friday, 11 Jul 2003 09:05)
