What is the movies society different from ours?

Released in a time when genetic engineering was coming into the light of the media, Gattaca presented a topic for heated discussion. Gattaca depicts dystopian ideals within a created Utopia. It begins to show you a genetically perfect society, but slowly the darker side of this fake world is shown. The movie is a warning to the people of the modern world of what might be. It cleverly displays the threatening side of technology, while telling a tragic yet heart-warming tale.

Too True, Coco. You never know... some of the technology in Gattaca is probably already in use... maybe more than we think. A very interesting thought, on which many people probably have a lot to say. The amount of information revealed to the public (regarding genetics etc) is most definately very limited. In fear of public outcry, no doubt. It'd be great to know what's happening behind the scenes of science... but THAT is wishful thinking!

The "color" of the film gave it an old-fashioned look, kind of like a sepia-tone photograph. The score and style of the clothing was old-fashioned, too. Very classic, like something from the late 40's-50's.

I love this movie. It's one of my absolute favorites, ranking right up there with BladeRunner.

Gattaca is about a desire to attain perfection and the idea that we can allow others to set our limits and live according to them, that we ourselves set limits of what we can accomplish and live accordingly, and that we have the power to outpace those limits if we dare and live up to virtually limitless potential. To achieve far more than what others expect of us or will allow of us.

It was sad that Vincent's brother decided to be defined by what his "genetics" said he was capable of. It was sad that Eugene allowed his limits to be set by society and the need to be "perfect". How wonderful that Vincent never allowed other's views of his "limits" to stop him from achieving his dreams or goals.

By the way the title "GATTACA" is comprised of the four letters of the genetic code of all living organisms
T = Thymine
A = Adenine
G = Guanine
C = Cytosine
Pretty clever I thought.

And from what I remember I think the movie was basically about eugenics.

Yes, very clever way to title the movie. :)

It is an interesting theme, eugenics as a means to developing the best children from a union. In the movie they didn't try and breed specific people together, but tried to get the best possible combination of genes from a couple.

Hitler made it a governmental, social, and political policy, but it's the purpose for the way many people have chosen mates for centuries. They just don't go into such details as requesting DNA samples.... yet. ;)

ok a coupe of things i would like to add...

firstly it was jerome not Ugene who burned himself. it was because he couldnt live to his potential after his fall from grace when he only won a siver olympic medal. he tells us that he will kill himself in the middle of the movie when he tells us how he became crippled.

i am supposed to be doing a disscussion piece on this tomorrow and it sucks that i only found this site today :(.

if anyone could post a message saying why GATTACA is spelt in that order of letters (not relating to the meaning of the letters ACGT but why the movie wasn't called TAGC for instance, could you please message it?

on last thing. the immortal gene was a creation by Traci Harding in her Ancient Future Trilogy, not something scientiests are, at least adnitting to, looking for.
