This movie is the only good teen movie it's a shame they had to go and release a second cruel intentions which was 2 hours of my life i'll never get back. Sequels, by definition r never better that the original (With the exception of Godfather 2, that film rules!)
Anyhuww, I think Ryan Philippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar are both amazing in this film. The two conspirators, they remind me of Iago in Othello! ( yea i sound like a complete Geek right?) Reese Witherspoon was ok too but i thought Selma Blair's charachter Cecille was a bit unbelievable. I dont know any people r children for that matter who are that immature!
The soundtrack kicks ass too! I recommend it. The best songs on it are Blur's Coffee and Tv and the Verve's Bittersweet symphony, of course!

Does anybody else think the scene in which Catherine walks out of the church and is confronted by her school peers who now know the truth is amazing?
It's satisfying to the watcher because Catherine has finally got her commupence but it's also heart wrenching because her parents walk away from her and she is left completaly on her own. The use of the Verve's Bittersweet Symphony is so fitting.

Dont be a lazy girl and go watch it yourself!

>>By Too Smart for a nickname   (Sunday, 5 Oct 2003 13:01)

catherine was seriouly cracked. sarah michelle gellars performance was amazing. she was such a cruel, heartless bitch, who wanted to have sex with her step brother. some of the scenes were pretty intense and it was a major plus that we got to see ryan phillippes ass! it was so sad when he died at the end b/c he got so close to real love and it got taken away from them. at lease it gave reese a chance to out catherine and expose that fake for the real person she was. she manipulated people for too long.

Anybody familiar with the fact that this is actually a contemporary rewrite of Les Liaisons Dangereuses by C. De Laclos, an eitheenth century French writer who wanted to expose the dreadful behaviour of the gentry in his time?
There have been two film versions of the book, Dangerous Liaisons (with Malkovitch and Close: superb!) and Valmont (a lot less supberb). What disturbs me about Cruel Intentions is that the cruelty of the characters is something beyond their age. That kind of cruelty is, at least. To me, compared to the book and the best film, this is just kids playing silly games with fire. You cannot be that corrupted at that age, unless you're truly criminal and that's not what this is about. Transferring the sexual behaviour and lusts of adults in mid-life crisis to a bunch of teenagers just doesn't work for me, sorry.

If you enjoyed this movie than I suggest you all watch Dangerous Liasons with Meyril Streep and Jhon Malkocitch it's the original and by far THE BEST!

Ok yeah i actually think dangerous Liasions is a brilliant movie but in terms of "Teen movies" Cruel Intentions is a very good movie. Aywin i disagree with your view that teenagers couldn't be that manipulative or conniving with their use if sexuality. The particular charachters that Gellar & Philippe are playing are rich, upper class ,selfish socialites who haven't been given a particularly good rolemodel in their parents. when their parents are mentioned (which is only once in the movie) Phillipes "impototent" father is "diddling" the maid and Sebastian descibes Catherines mother as a "gold digging whore".
also i know people , young people who use their sexuality to connive all the time so thats why i can believe this story. The fact that they are young doesnt matter because in their world thay are all adults who play all child like when around the parents. Which in turn means they are even more manipulative than the "so called"adults!

i agree that teenagers can be as manipulative as and in some cases more manipulative than adults. however, i think the earlier adaptations of the novel are more convincing and more successful in depicting what the novel actually intended to do - to critisize their contemporary society and the life style of the upper class.
yet, the annette characterization in Cruel Intentions is far better than the one in the Colin Firth version - i think

how you think this movie sucks is beyond my mind i don't eve think ryan phillipe is hott and i like this movie

>>By Jackthepumpkinking   (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 23:19)

yeah, anyone who thinks that Cruel Intensions sucked has no clue! Don't mean to be bitchy, but this movie kicked ass all the way. The way all the characters reacted to each other was amazing. The dialogue between Catherine and Sebastian at times was so clever and well written. This is the ultimate "I wish i could be that bitchy and get away with it movie." WATCH IT AGAIN -- LOVE IT :)

Cruel Intentions is the shit, it was fukin fabulous, and is 1 of the best movies out, realsitic casting and great script, and not to mention the acting!! It seriously is one very high ranking film, how could anyone NOT liike this movie??!! It has depth, yet is still comprehendable for the lesser-minded people!!! while the characters may still be teenagers, they are still realsitc in that sector of soceity, they are the mock ups of their parents, and are there to represent the way upper-class society really works- Money, Sex, lies and completely twisted, making it everything but normal!!- Jst like the government!!
As for the sequel, it was the most pathetic excuse for a movie i hav yet to witness!! it was shit!! it had some serious issues. If you make a movie that is to be the prequel of the original, you need to use the same actors, setting, and the same style of writing-i wouldnt recommend it unless you hav NOTHING else to do, i almost turned it off half way though it was that crap!! I couldnt bear to watch the end, i did, and now i regret it!!

any ideas how Cruel Intentions is related to the comedy of manners?

>>By papatya   (Thursday, 11 Dec 2003 14:21)

I wish most of you would update your vocabulary. It gets really tedious to read the same stereotype praise all over again. And yes, some people don't actually share your opinion, and still they're valuable human beings. Amazing, isn't it?
I haven't seen the second film, so I'm in no position to judge. But if it is really that bad, from my point of view it only proves that the book was the strength of the first film, and without it you're lost. Excavating a once brilliant idea only produces emptiness. Some people just don't get this.

>>By Aywin   (Thursday, 11 Dec 2003 19:18)

Aywin u really do get around dont u. I have read the book which i liked but i think i might try reading it in english. lots of the vocab is quite difficult in french. I dont think u can really compare the book and the film since the film is really only quite loosely based on the book, but 1 thing that the film has that kicks the book out of orbit? Ryan Phillipe's arse. A picture is worth a thousand words and he makes a bloody good picture. (What can i say, i'm a hormonal 16 year old)

>>By fish4ever   (Sunday, 18 Jan 2004 13:23)

And yes i no i sound like i'm showing off but i hate it when people get all hoity coz they think they r smarter than those around them.

>>By fish4ever   (Sunday, 18 Jan 2004 13:25)

Cruel intentions 2 is the prequel, I wish I had known that before as I might have watched that one first. In fact I was unaware that it was a prequel when I started watching it, and was quite confused due to this lack of information. These flicks are definatly not for everybody. I found the morality to be a tad disturbing, but hey, I wasn't raised in that environment. I think both movies are worth watching, but the first (2nd?) one is a must if you are planning on watching "Not Another Teen Movie".

>>By Spazzmania   (Wednesday, 21 Jan 2004 06:22)

Have to admit the "not another teen movie" take on cruel intentions was hilarious! but, seriously, i think Cruel intentions is in a league of it's own when compared with the teen crap hollywood spit out at the same time, such as 10 things i hate about u and (uggghhh) she's all that. They were just the same basic stories told in different ways, cruel intentions focused on a section within society and completey captured it's essence.

>>By Too Smart for a nickname   (Friday, 12 Mar 2004 23:03)

Cruel Intentions is the ultimate movie for showing people just what they're capable of if they set their minds (or bodies) to it.Sarah Michelle Gellar was outstanding as kathryn.I must admit, I felt sooo sorry for her at the end.Ok, she is obviously still manipulating me, but still! With the tears...and the song...and...As you may notice, I think cruel Intentions is the best teen movie around.

>>By psi   (Tuesday, 16 Mar 2004 19:39)

Simply stated, Dangerous Liasons is a far superior movie on several levels. Cruel Intentions is a trite, but amusing attempt of a remake of Liasons.

I love superior movies...I love trite and amusing movies. I own both flicks.

P.S. It is Glenn Close, not Meryl Streep who plays the leading female role in Liasons.

>>By Bronte   (Thursday, 18 Mar 2004 23:00)

any movie with sarah michelle gellar in it has my vote

>>By therion   (Sunday, 28 Mar 2004 18:55)

what's up with this dangerous liasons?? what language is it in anyways? how long ago was it released?

>>By Cookie8Monster   (Sunday, 18 Apr 2004 06:43)

Cruel ...... uhmm true about people reactions and characters.

>>By Eliene   (Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:47)

that's what made the movie so awesome!

>>By Cookie8Monster   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 07:06)

I've read so many discussions on this movie and cannot believe the amount of people who think Ryan Phillippe is a bad actor! he's amazing in this film, so conniving and suave. The only bad acting in this movie is on Selma Blair's part but lets face it has she ever been in anything where she actualy endeared the audience to her? the girl sucks at acting! Sarah Michelle Gellar is great too but i've gotta say one of my favourites in the movie is Bunny Cauldwell, Cecille's mother. The scene where she says "BLACK, brown sugar......no sugar" when she finds out about Ronald is priceless!!!
