I liked the original (mostly because I thought that Gene Wilder did such an excellent job playing Willly Wonka), but the current version is much more entertaining. I agree with the comments above, that JD did a good job. I dont think he did better than Gene, I actually think their performances were equal. They made us feel that Wonka is weird, a bit evil and disturbing, yet we still love them. I think that's what Willy Wonka is all about...

I liked the original Gene Wilder film as well. I liked the oompa loompa songs in the original as well. Yet, I do admit that the additional story line on the Johnny Depp version was a nice addition.

it is my last great fantastic movie ever seen...i liked all the scenes in the factory, and the cynical gaze ,about the consumption society, that lurks behind the humour, is great...i liked esp the scene of tv room and all the anthems.

I think it was far darker than the book was, JD was too...creepy, not eccentric, and the oompah loompahs were simply annoying.
