Discussion: Charlie And The Chocolate Factory Pages: 1 2 I liked the original (mostly because I thought that Gene Wilder did such an excellent job playing Willly Wonka), but the current version is much more entertaining. I agree with the comments above, that JD did a good job. I dont think he did better than Gene, I actually think their performances were equal. They made us feel that Wonka is weird, a bit evil and disturbing, yet we still love them. I think that's what Willy Wonka is all about...>>By Honey Bunny I liked the original Gene Wilder film as well. I liked the oompa loompa songs in the original as well. Yet, I do admit that the additional story line on the Johnny Depp version was a nice addition.
