The robot is the representatif of the company..the company wants the alien for bio warfare ...and the robot is their insurance they will get it.;the only one who knows the plans..the robot will also not be harmed because it's metal wires and some biofluid ,the alien only wants flesh according to the movie

whwere did the aliens actually come from?I heard they were genetically enginnered bio-mechanoids to be used as weapons or something...

aliens came from the planet that the crew of the ship was sent to on company orders.
basically, the company wanted to use the life-form as a weapon of war and to study it and such. ash, the android was insurance so that the ship it was on would arrive back to earth...minus a crew, of course.....expendable...as Mother (the ship's computer) explained in the movie.

yeah I know that (hardcore alien fan here) but I was just wondering where the ship came from-there's still an alien homeworld waiting to be discovered...

enh...dunno. but i do know that they should have kept it at 2 films.

I have a theory (hardestcore alien fan here) that the ship discovered by the crew of "The Nostromo" on LV426 was infact another alien culture already using "aliens" for its own bio-weapon uses which crashed while transporting a supply of eggs?. "aliens" are infact a parasitic spieces which inhabit random lifeforms throughout the universe with the origins unknown. They are indeed rats of the universe jumping ship and colonizing at every oppotunity!

in the book "earth hive" humans go to what is thought to be the aliens homeworld where (eventualy) they nuke the crap out of it until the crust get's too messed up and the planet is majorly screwed (not a direct quote) of course by the time they get back to earth the alien people were studying had been broken out, laid eggs and generally made itself at home to the point where people had to abondon the planet........
the large species (big dead guy on the ship in the first film) is also featured in this book...... but they keep it kinda vague

in the aliens V's predator books the predator species uses the alien species to train young warriors, they drop a few eggs on a planet, wait till the hatch/attach to something - pop out a few big aliens, then go down and kill them (at least that's the plan.... people always manage to get themselves involved and screw things up)

Alien is a more complex film than it first appears.

If you have never seen it in the cinema then make sure that you do. It is a very different experience in my view.
